He just wiped the tooth with gauze and applied some transparent stuff on top of that filling. Should I be worried? What is the mechanism of this method?

What your dentist placed on your tooth was a "desensitizer" which works by "sealing the dentinal tubules" (much like a varnish or lacquer that flows sealing or closing all openings) that work transmitting stimuli to the pulp; usually this sensation is experienced from hot or cold foods or drinks along with your saliva and air that may rush across this area during breathing or talking. This may be caused by the contraction and expansion of the tooth and the restorations being at different ratios, new restorations that have been placed especially ones at the gum line or possibly some exposed root surface that is below the cementoenamel junction, or not covered with enamel and caused by recession. There are many reasons "why" this sensitivity occurs.The desensitizer works well, but I've yet to find one that is a permanent solution for serious sensitivity problems. The acidic foods and drinks ingested by a patient will cause a reduction in the strength of the material which usually causes this problem to reoccur. I always recommend that patients introduce the use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth such as "Sensodyne" into their daily regime, to further help eliminate any recurring sensitivity.
Tooth Sensitivity can be caused because the tooth is becoming somewhat porous with very tiny holes that help transfer that heat(or lack of it) into the nerve of the tooth.BY placing a laquer over the surface, he is insulating your tooth! :)
no you shouldnt be worried..he didnt this as the last person said to insulate the tooth...the sensivity should end after this was done..its like placing enamel(protects tooth) on filling to stop sensitivity...no worries:) if you still feel sensitivity after a few days go back to the denist...it may be that the filling was deeper than antisapated..feel better:)
